Dilation of the papilla is the initial and fundamental step in sialendoscopy (endoscopy of the salivary duct system to solve obstruction problems). Seldinger technique allows dilation of the papilla prior to sialendoscopy. It is atraumatic and very safe technique. The presence of the guide wire in the lumen of the bougie (grooved probe) prevents a via falsa. After dilatation, the endoscope can be introduced, either directly or with the help of the guide wire, introducing it into the working channel in a retrograde manner (from the tip to the handle).
