Dilation of the papilla is the initial and fundamental step in sialendoscopy (endoscopy of the salivary duct system to solve obstruction problems). The classic technique consists in the introduction of dilating probes of increasing diameter. These probes are atraumatic due to their blunt tip and smooth surface. Sometimes it may be necessary to use a conic dilator. Once adequate dilation has been obtained, the endoscope is introduced to begin navigation of the major salivary ducts, Stensen's duct (in the parotid gland) or Wharton's duct (in the submandibular gland).
